Suggesting that no one 'go green' would be heralded as political/interpersonal suicide for many c0-workers in the Hollywood Film Industry. I know this from my own mistakes, so please read on:
I have always contended (because I am one of them) that it takes a certain twinge of narcissism and a pinch of self-centered personality types to be an actor or actress, or performer.
To stand in front of a stage audience, be it in a close-up with lines for commercials, much less movies, takes a kind of self'- (Let's just call it 'confidence') that perhaps sets us apart from others people goals and desires.
But here is the hitch. There are a million (and 3) people who are just as talented, handsome, beautiful as the major actors we see on the screen today.
The difference is: they are there and the unknowns- aren't.
What sets people who are movie icons apart from others who live as unknowns, is fodder for volumes of psychological dissertations.
What I am getting to is that it is dangerous when one in the 'industry' gets GREEN WITH ENVY. Please, do not go green with envy. It's a hard way to go.
Politics, fragile personalities, quirks, insecurity, uppity attitudes- but mainly jealousy and 'better than' attitudes can sink careers faster then a cruise ship.
We all want notoriety, to be seen as popular and successful, for the most part. I have been around actors who think they walk on clouds.
I have also met fellow actors that are just good people with humble attitudes, ie., Richard Gere, Gary Seniess (Spelling:) and Eric Clapton. I am sure there are others. Kevin Spacey was heralded as a tremendous actor by another actor when we were leaving the set. I now not only respect Kevin even more, I respect that character actor who gave Gary such a high kudos. That takes egotistically great guts, in my book. That comment was never heard, will never be known who said it, but I heard this actor acknowledge Kevin in this way and I will never forget it. In the same way, your comments will be recorded by others. Will they be recalled to boost or decrease your standing?
The message of support than you, and I, need to keep in mind that there is ALWAYS someone more talented, taller, buxomer, prettier than you or I will ever be. I remember my casting director say that, "there are tons of girls who get up in the morning without any make-up that look better than women in full make-up." This is paraphrased, but you see what I mean.
We work in an industry that is competitive, demanding on many levels, and we work as a team. Football doesn't demand the level of teamwork a movie crew and support staff need. Egos are mandatory, but keeping them in check and in proportion speak of you as a person- off and on the set.
I know of two very well known comedians that I would not begin to emulate. One I have seen on TV, and the other during lunch. They stand out- but not UP!
Therefore, be aware of your attitude that may bring down a morale issue, know that you are there and no one else is (That is a kudo for ya!) and keep a level head and be respectful and courtious because, you are EXPENDABLE and fame is a short fart in a hurricane-if you will.
LOVE YOUR CO-WORKERS AND LOVE THE LIFE YOU LIVE! That will set you Emmies above the typical famous, wealthy- loser.
